Presented essential items including sewing machines, kente looms, gas cooking stoves, hair dryers to aid in the training of liberated ‘trokosi’ girls.
Area of Focus:
Economic and Community Development

The Baptist Vocational Institute serves as a sanctuary and training ground for young women who have been liberated from the "Trokosi" system—an ancestral practice of ritual servitude. While these women had found their freedom, they were still searching for the tools to build their independence.
During that initial visit, our club engaged in a deep "needs assessment," speaking with both the students and their instructors. It became clear that while the spirit of the institute was strong, its resources were strained. To truly break the cycle of poverty and marginalization, these young women needed more than just a safe haven; they needed high-caliber vocational equipment and teachers who were equipped with modern instructional techniques.
The Promise Kept: Equipping for Excellence
Returning to the institute this month felt less like a visit and more like a homecoming with a purpose. Driven by the findings of our 2020 assessment, we returned to present a comprehensive suite of essential training tools designed to turn classrooms into launching pads for careers.
The donation included:
Textile & Fashion Tools: Professional-grade sewing machines and traditional Kente looms, allowing the students to master both contemporary tailoring and the intricate heritage of Ghanaian weaving.
Culinary Infrastructure: Industrial gas cooking stoves to modernize the catering department and prepare students for the hospitality industry.
Beauty & Grooming Tech: High-capacity hair dryers and salon furniture, providing the foundation for a fully functional hairdressing curriculum.
Instructional Furniture: Durable workstations and seating to ensure a comfortable and dignified learning environment.
Beyond the Hardware: Capacity Building
We recognized that even the best tools are only as effective as the hands that guide them. As part of this intervention, our club also facilitated capacity-building sessions for the teachers. By updating the faculty on modern vocational trends and equipment maintenance, we are ensuring that this investment remains sustainable and that the quality of education at the institute remains competitive.
A Legacy of Collective Action
This intervention is a testament to the power of the Rotary network. To the Rotarians who championed this cause, the donors who provided the financial backbone, and every individual who contributed a "brick" to this project—we say thank you.
When these liberated girls sit behind a sewing machine or stand before a Kente loom, they are no longer defined by their past. They are designers, entrepreneurs, and breadwinners. They are the architects of a new, free legacy. Through Service Above Self, we haven't just donated items; we have invested in the sovereignty of the Ghanaian woman.
