Commissioning the 12-Seater Biodigester Facility

Commissioning the 12-Seater Biodigester Facility

Addressing a critical infrastructure gap for students and faculty. This project improves campus hygiene, reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses, and ensure that students have access to a safe and dignified environment.

Area of Focus:

Water/Sanitation/Hygiene

In a major step toward enhancing campus hygiene and environmental sustainability, the Rotary Club of Accra-South has officially commissioned and handed over a state-of-the-art 12-seater biodigester toilet facility to the students and staff of Ave Dakpa Senior High School.

Located in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region, Ave Dakpa SHS has long been a center of academic ambition, but like many growing institutions, its physical infrastructure faced significant pressure. This week, that pressure was met with a modern, high-tech solution.

Why a Biodigester? Innovation Meets Sanitation

Unlike traditional septic systems, the biodigester technology installed at Ave Dakpa represents the future of green infrastructure.

  • Environmentally Friendly: The system uses aerobic digestion to break down waste rapidly, preventing groundwater contamination and eliminating the odors often associated with older school latrines.

  • Space-Efficient & Sustainable: The compact design is perfect for a busy school environment and requires significantly less maintenance and frequent "dislodging" than conventional pits.

  • Health First: By providing 12 dedicated stalls, we are drastically reducing wait times and improving the overall sanitary conditions for hundreds of students, which directly correlates to better school attendance and health outcomes.

A Handover of Hope

The commissioning ceremony was attended by school leadership, traditional authorities, and the District Education Directorate. For the students of Ave Dakpa, this facility is more than just a building; it is a restoration of dignity. Access to clean, private, and modern washrooms allows students—particularly young women—to focus on their studies without the stress of inadequate facilities.

Our Commitment to the Volta Region

This project is a key highlight of our 2025/26 Silver Jubilee goals and aligns with Rotary’s global focus on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). By investing in Ave Dakpa, we are ensuring that the leaders of tomorrow have the foundational infrastructure they need today.

We extend our gratitude to the school's administration for their cooperation and to our club members whose contributions made this high-impact project a reality. At Ave Dakpa SHS, the future just got a little brighter—and a lot cleaner.
