Cup it for her: Menstrual Health Project

Cup it for her: Menstrual Health Project

Offering sustainable, long-term solution to period poverty with a comprehensive career guidance session, where students engaged with professionals to explore diverse vocational paths and strategic goal-setting.

Area of Focus:

Maternal and Child Health

The project involved a tree planting exercise, a career guidance session and the donation of three (300) hundred menstrual cups to selected pupils from four schools, between the ages of 12years and 18years. This was an education, awareness creation, demonstration and donation of the menstrual cups, as well as career counseling/mentorship for young women to practice safe menstrual health and hygiene and for the young men to be supportive and empathetic to their female peers around that time of the month. The tree planting exercise served to instill the spirit of environmental protection in the students whiles the career guidance session and professional experiences and knowledge shared with the students made a great impact on them to make good career choices that will make their future bright and benefit their communities.

Project Impact: How the project will help the community after the project ends

Despite being crucially fundamental to the health and wellbeing of women and girls, menstrual health is often overlooked as a health priority and access to menstrual health education, products, and support is limited. This has consequently led to many young women and girls being unprepared for menarche, face challenges in accessing menstrual health products and support in managing menstruation in a healthy and dignified way. Unfortunately, in rural Ghana, there is some level of stigma, stemming from misconceptions, socio-cultural norms and even traditional practices, surrounding menstruation that girls often look on this period of the month with a lot of anxiety and dread whiles resorting to using many unhealthy materials. This awareness creation and donation of the menstrual cups to these young girls would help them to practice safe menstrual health
