Commissioning WASH Projects in Manya Jopanya and Agbuviekpone

We officially commissioned two modern toilet and sanitary facilities. Providing residents with safe, hygienic, and sustainable sanitation options to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and support environmental health.

Area of Focus:

Water/Sanitation/Hygiene

In the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, two communities—Manya Jopanya and Agbuviekpone—have taken a monumental step toward a healthier, more sustainable future. This morning, the Rotary Club of Accra-South officially commissioned two comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) projects, bringing essential infrastructure and life-saving education to the heart of these local schools.

The Power of the Rotary WASH Program

The Rotary International WASH program is more than just a plumbing initiative; it is a strategic framework designed to motivate clubs to build lasting change. By merging two of Rotary’s key Areas of FocusWater and Sanitation and Basic Education and Literacy—we ensure that infrastructure is backed by the knowledge needed to maintain it.

When a school gains access to clean water and dignified sanitation, the impact is immediate: absenteeism drops, student health improves, and teachers can focus on their primary mission—education.

Innovation in the Backyard: The "Tippie Tap" Revolution

One of the most inspiring highlights of the commissioning was the overwhelming community adoption of the Tippie Tap—a simple, effective, and hands-free handwashing station made from locally sourced materials.

During our initial assessments and training sessions, we introduced the Tippie Tap concept as a low-cost way to maintain hygiene at home. By the time we arrived for today's official commissioning, we were moved to find that 60% of households in the community had already built their own stations.

This level of proactive adoption is the ultimate indicator of a successful project. It proves that the community hasn't just received a gift; they have embraced a culture of hygiene. When a mother builds a Tippie Tap for her family or a student teaches their neighbor how to use one, the cycle of waterborne disease is broken permanently.

Sustainable Impact, One District at a Time

As we handed over the facilities in Manya Jopanya and Agbuviekpone, the message was clear: sustainability is a collective responsibility. Our club provides the expertise and the initial resources, but the true "engine" of this project is the community’s commitment to health.

We extend our gratitude to the school authorities, the traditional leaders of Shai-Osudoku, and our dedicated Rotarians. Today, we didn't just turn on a tap—we turned the tide for thousands of residents in the Greater Accra Region.
