In a powerful demonstration of the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self," the Rotary Club of Accra-South has renovated the kitchen facilities at the James Camp Prison in Accra. The project includes a full facility upgrade and the donation of new corn and pepper grinding machines to improve the prison’s food preparation capabilities.
At the commissioning ceremony, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Mrs. Augustina Mensah Fiadzo, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the station, praised the club for the timely intervention, describing it as a "momentous milestone" for the facility. She noted that the upgrade is a vital contribution to the welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts at James Camp Prison.
Reflecting on the challenges the prison previously faced, DDP Fiadzo explained that the frequent breakdown of their aging corn mill had severely hampered daily operations. She lauded the Rotary Club for exceeding expectations by not only providing new industrial-grade milling machines but also transforming the kitchen into a hygienic, highly functional, and modern environment.
The OIC noted that this partnership aligns with the Think Prisons 360 Degree initiative and urged attendees and the general public to support the Prisons Improvement and Sustainability Pesewa Fund (PISPES) by dialing *972*1*3100#. As a token of appreciation, DDP Fiadzo presented the club with a citation of honor for their invaluable support.
Rotarian President Klenam Fiadzoe highlighted that the intervention is part of the club’s commitment to holistic inmate reformation. He noted that the club’s partnership with the prison began three years ago, starting with the successful renovation and upgrade of the prison infirmary to clinic standards.
Regarding the kitchen project, President Fiadzoe outlined the extensive scope of the work, which includes A renovated cooking shed, newly tiled floors, and repainted walls, A fully refurbished inner kitchen housing the new milling machines, Replacement of all windows and doors, complete with mosquito-proof meshing to ensure food hygiene.
President Fiadzoe reaffirmed the club's identity as "People of Action" dedicated to community development. He commended his fellow Rotarians for their relentless support in executing the projects, and embodying the 2025/26 Rotary theme: "Unite for Good.”
