Industrial Visit
Monday, June 16, 2025

In the spirit of Vocational Service Month, members of the Rotary Club of Accra-South embarked on a dual-purpose industrial tour to the Eastern Region, visiting two titans of Ghanaian excellence: the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) and Daystar Agro.
This journey was more than a field trip; it was an exploration of the "institutional scaffolding" that supports Ghana’s most vital economic sectors—agriculture and scientific research.
At the Heart of Gold: The Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG)
Our first stop was the historic grounds of CRIG in Tafo. As Rotarians, we often focus on the end-user of our projects, but at CRIG, we saw the scientific foundation that makes Ghanaian cocoa the gold standard of the world.
The scientists and researchers at CRIG provided us with an masterclass in:
The Science of Sustainability: We toured the nurseries where high-yield, disease-resistant cocoa seedlings are developed to ensure the livelihoods of millions of farmers.
Value Addition: We explored the innovative ways CRIG is transforming cocoa husks and by-products into high-value items like soaps, fertilizers, and even specialized confectionery—a perfect example of the "circular economy" in action.
Preserving Heritage: Walking through the arboretum and the original plantations, we were reminded that the prosperity of our nation is rooted in the soil and the rigorous research that protects it.
Powering the Future: Daystar Agro
Following our deep dive into research, we transitioned to Daystar Agro to see how modern industrial strategy is applied to the agricultural supply chain. In an era where food security and efficient processing are paramount, Daystar Agro stands as a beacon of private-sector ingenuity.
Our tour of the Daystar facilities highlighted:
Operational Excellence: We observed the sophisticated machinery and logistics required to process and move agricultural products at scale, reinforcing the importance of "Service Above Self" in maintaining quality standards for the consumer.
Clean Energy Integration: A highlight for many was seeing how Daystar is integrating sustainable energy solutions into their industrial processes, aligning perfectly with Rotary’s focus on Environmental Protection.
Job Creation: Witnessing the diverse workforce at Daystar reminded us that for every successful agro-industrial venture, hundreds of families in the surrounding communities find stable, dignified employment.
Lessons in Vocational Service
As Rotarians, these visits are essential. They allow us to see the "engine room" of our economy and identify where our skills—in finance, technology, law, and strategy—can support these vital sectors.
Whether it was the quiet dedication of a researcher at CRIG or the high-octane efficiency of the team at Daystar Agro, the message of the day was clear: innovation is the bridge to our future.
We extend our deepest professional gratitude to the leadership teams at both the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana and Daystar Agro for their transparency, their hospitality, and their shared vision for a prosperous Ghana.
Where science meets industry, the possibilities for our community are endless.
