Rotary Club of Accra-South Launches GH¢537,000 Global Grant Project to Empower Persons with Disabilities in Ghana

The Rotary Club of Accra-South and it's project partners is proud to announce the launch of the Economic Development for the Disabled (EDD) Project, a Rotary Global Grant initiative designed to catalyze economic independence and physical mobility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the country.

Beginning in May 2026, the initiative represents a strategic investment of GH¢537,537.00 (US$48,867.00), specifically targeted to meet the critical needs of over 200 identified beneficiaries from various regions of Ghana. The project aims to implement a holistic empowerment model that combines high-level skills transfer with essential mobility infrastructure.

This Global Grant underscores Rotary’s commitment to "Service Above Self", focuses on one of it's areas of focus; Economic and Community Development and highlights the power of collaborative innovation in solving structural social challenges. By equipping persons with disabilities with both the physical tools and the digital-age skills required for business, the Rotary Clubs are fostering a more inclusive and resilient Ghanaian economy.

“At the Rotary Club of Accra-South, we view this project as a benchmark for future innovation” noted Klenam Fiadzoe, President of the Rotary Club of Accra-South. “It will be proof that more can, and should be done to build inclusive solutions that will harness the untapped value within the disabled community and ensure they are not left behind in our national digital and economic evolution.”

A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Empowerment The initiative is built on three core pillars:

  1. Human Capital Development: Rotarians and professional volunteers will dedicate over 200 hours of specialized training. The curriculum focuses on financial literacy, essential marketing (including social media strategies), customer development, and entrepreneurship to prepare beneficiaries for the modern marketplace.

  2. Enhanced Mobility: The project will facilitate the donation of 50 wheelchairs to selected groups and individuals, directly addressing the barrier of physical access to work and education.

  3. Sustainable Infrastructure: To ensure long-term impact, the initiative will establish a dedicated wheelchair maintenance facility. This hub will provide essential repair services, ensuring that mobility aids remain functional and reliable for years to come.

This project is made possible with the partnership of the Rotary Clubs of Accra-South, Mt. Airy, Washington DC, Charlotte Hall, Baltimore, Southern Frederick County (Urbana), New Market, Sykesville, Pikesville - Owings Mills, and Rotary Districts 9104 and 7620.

About the Rotary Club of Accra-South:
The Rotary Club of Accra-South is part of Rotary District 9104 in Ghana and one of more than 45,000 clubs and a global member network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change in communities.

Partner organizations

Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD)
The GSPD is a key organization in Ghana dedicated to advancing the rights and welfare of individuals with physical disabilities. It is a founding member and a crucial part of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), the national umbrella body for various disability groups in Ghana. They actively engage in advocacy, aiming to influence policy and legislation that promote the inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. Their work often involves raising public awareness about disability issues, challenging discrimination, and striving for an accessible and equitable society. They also focus on programs related to rehabilitation, education, and economic empowerment for their members, addressing the specific needs of physically disabled individuals in Ghana.

Wheels for Change, Inc.
Wheels for Change, Inc., founded by Paralympian Daniel Romanchuk, is a nonprofit organization focused on shifting societal perspectives about disability through the powerful platform of wheelchair racing. Recognizing both the sport’s transformative potential and the challenges in accessing adaptive sports, Romanchuk’s organization provides crucial support for aspiring wheelchair athletes by offering equipment, training resources, and mentorship. Domestically, Wheels for Change aids athletes through clinics, camps, and an equipment loan program. Internationally, it collaborates with communities, such as a program in Ghana, to supply racing equipment and create accessibility pathways.
