Accra’s beautiful coastline is facing an ecological crisis. Every day, tons of marine plastics and discarded clothing—locally known as Obroni Wawu—wash up on our shores, choking marine life and disrupting coastal communities.
Faced with this challenge, the Rotary Club of Accra-South has stepped up, uniting a powerful coalition of young leaders, environmental advocates, and grassroots heroes to take direct action.
In a massive collaborative effort, our club is joining forces with the Rotaract Clubs of Accra-South, Accra-Dansoman, Accra-Adabraka, and Accra Osu-Re, alongside The Or Foundation and the remarkable Tide Turners cooperative. Together, we are turning a standard weekend into a powerful demonstration of collaborative environmental stewardship.
Meeting the Challenge: A Dynamic Alliance
This initiative plugs directly into the high-energy, weekly cleanup exercises co-organized by The Or Foundation and the Tide Turners. By combining the strategic oversight of Rotary with the passion of four distinct Rotaract clubs, this project bridges the gap between civic leadership and boots-on-the-ground environmental action.
The strength of this project lies entirely in the unique strengths of our partners:
The Rotary & Rotaract Collaborative: Five distinct clubs from the Accra zone channeling our shared commitment to Service Above Self toward environmental sustainability.
The Or Foundation: A visionary non-profit working at the intersection of environmental justice and fashion waste upcycling, providing the infrastructure and research needed to ensure our impact lasts.
The Tide Turners: A pioneering, youth-led community cleanup cooperative. With over 65 paid members and an average of 100 weekly volunteers, this group brings unmatched discipline, structure, and physical strength to the frontlines of marine conservation. To date, they have incredibly removed over 3 million kilograms of textiles and plastic waste from Accra’s shores.
Clear Targets for Lasting Change
Our joint mission goes far beyond simply picking up litter. When our volunteers hit the beach, they are working toward four clear objectives:
Mass Waste Remediation: Physically extracting tons of heavy, water-logged textiles, ghost nets, and single-use plastics that clog our beaches and destroy marine habitats.
Supporting Grassroots Champions: Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Tide Turners to amplify their phenomenal work and sustain their weekly momentum.
Local & Global Advocacy: Raising critical awareness among local residents and the global diaspora about the real environmental cost of fast-fashion waste dumping in West African ecosystems.
Mentoring Future Leaders: Providing our Rotaractors and community youth with a deeply structured, hands-on volunteer experience rooted in civic responsibility and environmental discipline.
Beyond the Beach: Driving a Circular Economy
What happens to the waste we collect? It doesn't just go to another landfill. Through the strategic intervention of The Or Foundation, the extracted materials are carefully analyzed and funneled into circular economy research. The goal is to find sustainable, long-term avenues to upcycle, downcycle, and responsibly manage textile waste—keeping it permanently out of municipal landfills and our precious marine habitats.
This project is a testament to what happens when community organizations refuse to look away from local challenges. By combining professional strategy, youth energy, and grassroots discipline, we aren't just cleaning a beach—we are protecting our environment and proving that change is entirely possible when we work together.
